The Lakes of Mayo
Visit a new exhibition featuring ceramic reliefs, textiles and prints by Annaliese Brown, on display in the Courtyard Gallery (next to the café) until September.
The county of Mayo has at least 70 named lakes with unique shapes, which change over time with the rise and fall of the water levels, affected by tree planting, weather, changes to land use and urban development.
The artist’s work originated with the idea of exploring and experimenting with the shapes made by these lakes in the landscape, as viewed from above.
The work is inspired by the nature and topography of the artist’s rural home place and created using printing lino to carve the outline of the lakes and the tributary rivers, and sometimes adjoining roads and laneways.
The carved lino is then used to make ceramic reliefs.
