Recommendation to reinstate Claremorris - Athenry rail line welcomed

FIANNA Fáil Minister Dara Calleary has welcomed the publication of the joint draft report for the All-Island Strategic Rail Review (ALSRR), putting Ireland on track for a new age of rail.

Among the key recommendations is the reinstatement of the Western Rail Corridor between Claremorris and Athenry.

The review has considered how the rail network on the island can promote sustainable connectivity between the cities, enhance regional accessibility and support balanced regional development, with a particular emphasis on the north-west.

It recommends electrification, new and enhanced routes, greater regional balance and improved speeds and frequency.

Said Minister Calleary: “I firmly believe in the untapped potential of rail to contribute towards social and economic development across the island of Ireland, providing faster and more frequent connectivity, connecting communities, as well as helping us meet our ambitious climate action objectives.

“Delivering balanced development and investing in public transport is a key priority for Fianna Fáil in government and I warmly welcome the recommendation to reopen the Western Rail Corridor between Claremorris and Athenry, which would provide a huge boost for the western region.

“I also understand that short-term recommendations include at least hourly services between major cities and one train every two hours between other centres and I would expect and welcome a more frequent service on the Westport/Ballina to Dublin line.”

He continued: “However, if we are to realise the full potential of the Western Rail Corridor, I believe it is vital that the line is eventually extended to Sligo.

“Fianna Fáil is committed to achieving balanced regional development and strengthen rural economies and communities of which regional accessibility is a key element. I will continue to liaise with the relevant stakeholders and ensure a continued focus remains on improved connectivity to and from the north-west.”
