The Imperial Hotel, Castlebar.

Four investors interested in giving fresh life to historic Mayo hotel

Four investors have lodged submissions to Mayo County Council in respect of acquiring and renovating the historic Imperial Hotel in Castlebar.

The authority had sought expressions of interest from developers interested in bringing the derelict property at the Mall back into use as a hotel.

Now the review process of the applications is underway.

A spokesperson said: "Mayo County Council is fully aware of the historical significance of the building and its status as a protected structure.

"Such factors will be fully considered in regard to whether its future use is as a business innovation hub or as hotel accommodation.

"The council is currently continuing to progress both options and no final decision on the future use of the formal Imperial Hotel has been made."

The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has granted Mayo County Council Urban Regeneration Development funding for the Castlebar Historic Core Reactivation Initiative.

This includes grant funding for the restoration and repurposing the property as a Business Innovation Hub.

The council has continued to advance this project through the required stages of departmental approvals and this process is ongoing.
