Passing of popular Mayo musician and entertainer John Walsh

The death has taken place of John Walsh, Quay Road, Westport.

He died peacefully at University Hospital Galway surrounded by his loving family.

John will be sadly missed by his loving wife Maureen (née Munnelly), daughter Karen, son Sean, daughter-in-law Corinna, granddaughters Ellie and Naoise, his sisters Mary Hopkins (Westport), Ann McIntyre (Charlestown), Breege Walsh (Mayo Abbey) and Edel (Castlebar), brothers Gerard and Bob (Westport), sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives and friends, to whom sympathy is tendered.

He was predeceased by his parents Brodie and Bea Walsh and his nephew Patrick Hopkins.

Paying tribute to him, Westport Councillor Brendan Mulroy said John was a brilliant guitarist and entertainer.

He played music with his wife Maureen and their band, The Evergreens, was known and loved throughout Mayo.

"He was a great friend and neighbour to us all at the Quay.

"Deepest sympathies to Maureen, Karen and Sean and the extended Walsh family.

"John was always in good form and enjoying life. Westport has lost a true gentleman.

"May his gentle soul rest in peace."

Burial took place in Aughavale Cemetery, Westport, after Requiem Mass today in St. Mary's Church, Westport.
