Last year's beaten finalists up and running in Mayo senior championship
Last year's beaten finalists, Ballina Stephenites, were put to the pin of their collar by Breaffy in the pick of today's Connacht Gold Mayo Senior Football Championship matches.
The Stephenites ran out one-point winners (0-12 to 0-11) after a bruising encounter in central Mayo.
Group 1's other game was a local derby in which Mayo Gaels were 0-16 to 0-10 winners over Balla.
In Group 3, Belmullet backed up their impressive league form with a 1-7 to 1-6 win at home against Garrymore, while Ballintubber recovered from the dismissal of Cillian O'Connor in first-half injury time to run out 1-12 to 0-5 winners against The Neale in Cong.
The final senior game of the day was the east Mayo derby between Aghamore and Ballyhaunis, and the neighbours shared the spoils on a scoreline of Aghamore 0-9, Ballyhaunis 1-6.
The only Sunday game played in the Egan Jewellers Mayo Intermediate Football Championship was the Group 4 encounter between Castlebar Mitchels B and Bohola Moy Davitts, with the east Mayo men running out 2-16 to 1-8 winners in the in end.
It was a busier day in the TF Royal Hotel & Theatre Junior Football Champions, in which Shrule/Glencorrib eked out a narrow victory over south Mayo rivals Tourmakeady by 0-8 to 0-6 in Group 1, with the other game in that group between north Mayo neighbours Northern Gaels and Ballycastle finishing in a draw (1-9 to 2-6).
The Group 3 game between Eastern Gaels and Kilmovee Shamrocks also produced a draw. It finished Eastern Gaels 0-9, Kilmovee Shamrocks 1-6.
The second round games in all three grades will be played over the weekend of September 1/2/3.
