New Admiral Brown Heritage Trail launched

A NEW Admiral Brown Heritage Trail has been launched in Foxford.

The local Admiral William Brown Society are behind the initiative, which was launched during the annual RiverFest in the town and also to mark National Heritage Week.

Born in Foxford in 1777, Admiral William Brown was the founder of the Navy in Argentina and also contributed to the fight for independence in the South American country.

He died in Buenos Aires in 1857 and is regarded as a national hero in Argentina.

The trail is just under a kilometre in length and has been digitised via QR codes.

Incorporating all the historical and significant sites associated with the late Admiral in Foxford town, it also includes the grave of Argentina’s ambassador to Ireland, Laura Bernal.

In total, there are 14 points of interest along the trail, which was officially launched by Minister of State Dara Calleary.

It also features fabulous drone footage of Foxford by David Beattie of My Irish Drone.

An Admiral Brown trail brochure has also been published and is available locally.

Foxford has maintained strong links with Argentina over the years.

Margaret Reilly, chairperson of the Admiral Brown Society, said she is excited about the digitalisation of the project as it allows Foxford to be showcased to a global audience.

Speaking with North Mayo Tourism, she said the society hope to continue working with Mayo County Council to develop a cultural museum in the town.
