Call for age friendly parking spaces in new-look Mayo town centre car park
A Castlebar councillor has called for a number of age friendly car parking spaces to be included in the redevelopment of a town centre car park.
Fine Gael Concillor Ger Deere said during the redesign of the Market Square car park, a number of parking spaces, which accommodate our older and elderly drivers, should be designated close to banks and shops with easy access to the Main Street in the town.
He elaborated: “Our public realm spaces need to support older people in participating more fully in their communities.
"This intervention, in the area of the public realm, can make a big difference to the lives of older people.
"By doing this we will be better placed to meet the challenges that lie ahead for our older citizens.
"When the public realm is attractive and accessible, our older people can enjoy more active and connected lives.
"Small but practical changes can create environments that provide enhanced access for all.”
Councillor Deere said he had also received representations regarding these parking bays from members of Mayo Older People’s Council.
“I think that by designating some parking spaces as ‘Age Friendly’, it is a step in the right direction and a positive start to making Castlebar accessible to all ages and abilities,” he added.
