First pro-championship win for Mayo golfer

FORMER Ballyhaunis Golf Club member Andrew Hickey, from Greenwood, played the game of his life at Ardee Golf Club this week when he produced an eight shot win at the CTI Solutions Irish PGA Assistants Championship to clinch his first ever professional tournament victory.

Andrew, now playing at Galway Golf Club, was the only player to end the week in double figures after rounds of 69, 68, 64 and 68 gave him a 16 under total.

A delighted Andrew, speaking after his win to irishgolfer.ie, said: “Yeah, a lot of the holes favoured my eye so it was nice to shoot a score around here. There was a lot of tight holes where other players hit irons but I felt comfortable hitting driver which was a huge advantage and shortened the shorter and tighter holes which I made a lot of birdies on.”

He thanked his girlfriend Anna for caddying for him during the week: “She has been a great support and hopefully she will caddy for me again and we might get another win!”

Andrew is son of James and Mary Hickey from Greenwood.
