Mayo footpath which posed problems for people with disabilities to be replaced

A member of Mayo County Council has welcomed the commencement of work on replacing a section of a problematic footpath in Castlebar.

Councillor Ger Deere had highlighted several months ago the dangerous condition of a footpath at New Antrim Strreet and had asked that it be replaced and brought into line with other footpaths at the location.

He explained: "The materials that were used to lay the path over 20 years ago were totally unsuitable and should only have be used as decorative and not in one frequently used by pedestrians.

"It posed a serious safety issue for all users, most notably people with sight issues and mobility problems, going about their daily lives."
