Positive step in addressing dereliction in south Mayo town

THE announcement of 12 social housing units for Ballinrobe will help address dereliction and vacancy in the town.

Welcoming this 'positive step', it is anticipated the projects will be on site in quarter three of 2024, an 'ambitious timeframe', Councillor Damien Ryan outlined.

Dereliction has been a huge problem and at last there is now a way forward, he stated.

His area colleague Councillor Michael Burke agreed it is an important programme of works for the town.

Councillor Patsy O'Brien said he had received a call querying the council powerwashing two of the buildings.

He was told there is an agreement across the county that when buildings are acquired under CPO for housing, the council will do a basic clean-up while waiting to 12 to 24 months for progress to be made, i.e. powerwashing and painting.
