Illuminating heart health in Mayo on World Heart Day

CROÍ, the heart and stroke charity, was delighted to collaborate for a second year with some of the most iconic and historic buildings, organisations and landmarks throughout the west to celebrate World Heart Day on September 29.

World Heart Day is a reminder to everyone around the world to take care of their hearts. This year’s World Heart Federation campaign focuses on the essential message of knowing our hearts first, because when we know more, we can take better care.

The illumination of The Galway Hooker, last year, docked at the Claddagh basin was a sight that brought much attention to the campaign, and encouraged many more organisations to come on board for this year’s illumination.

To mark their commitment in promoting the importance of Heart Heath, buildings and landmarks from Donegal down to Galway were lit in red on World Heart Day. In Mayo, they included Ashford Castle, Castlebar Garda Station, the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar, and the Mall bridge in Westport.

The illumination campaign draws a close on the many events organised by Croí throughout September in recognition of World Heart Month. Details of the events can be found at https://croi.ie/.

Croí not only encourages people to ensure their heart health is a priority, but also those around them, friends, family and colleagues. Croí’s aim is to educate and empower individuals, families and communities to take control of their heart health and to make and maintain the changes that can lead to a longer and healthier life.

Croí would like to extend thanks to the public, the many healthcare professionals, organisations and volunteers who worked to ensure World Heart Month was an outstanding success.
