Mayo energy information clinic series launched

MAYO County Council, in partnership with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), has launched their series of climate action talks.

The inaugural energy information clinic, which was hosted by Castlebar Mitchels GAA Club, marked the beginning of a series of informative sessions aimed at promoting energy efficiency and sustainability in homes and businesses.

Four pilot clinics are proposed over the coming weeks, under a collaborative effort between the Castlebar Municipal District (MD) and SEAI to create a platform for sharing knowledge, answering questions and helping people take advantage of available grants to improve the energy efficiency of their homes and businesses.

Speaking at the launch of the clinics, the cathaoirleach of the Castlebar MD, Councillor Al McDonnell, said: “Mayo County Council is committed to supporting our communities in their efforts to retrofit their homes and lower carbon emissions.

“We are thrilled to see such a positive response to our first energy information clinic and look forward to hosting more events in the future.”

He also expressed his desire for the government to provide additional support for farmers, the transport sector and alternative energy infrastructure.

The event drew in many participants, demonstrating the community's interest in making their homes more energy-efficient, warmer and cheaper to run.

Dr. Orla Nic Suibhne, SEAI SEC mentor, provided information on where energy is lost from our buildings, insights into the benefits of retrofitting our homes and on what SEAI retrofit grants are available to help.

Noel Rowland from Churchfield Homes, and the only registered one-stop-shop in the county, outlined what that service entails and discussed the benefits of insulation with real examples of financial and energy savings made by homeowners.

The questions and answers session and the one-on-one discussions received overwhelmingly positive feedback from attendees.

Upcoming events in the series will delve into other topics, including the advantages of heat pumps, the integration of solar panels and the SEAI grants available.

With a focus on addressing the community's needs and questions, these sessions promise to empower people with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about retrofitting their homes and businesses.

The next SEAI energy information clinics are planned for November 7 in Breaffy GAA Club and November 28 in Balla Community Centre.

Other talks, such as the opportunities for businesses in climate action and information on the upcoming community climate action fund, are also scheduled throughout November.

Details of all forthcoming events will be posted on Mayo County Council’s social media channels.
