‘Later’ gig for Lisa O'Neill in north Mayo venue
Ballinglen Museum of Art in Ballycastle has just announced new shows for November as part of its 'Later' series of nighttime events, including folk singer Lisa O'Neill, Indian slide guitarist Manish Pingle, hip-hop artist God Knows and contemporary folk duo Lemoncello.
The nighttime shows (supported by the Night Time Economy Unit in the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media) at Ballinglen have already proven a huge hit with audiences, including sold-out shows in September by both Eddie Lenihan and Cormac Begley.
On Saturday (November 4), Manish Pingle, from Mumbai, will be accompanied by tabla player Rupak Kumar Pandit for the first part of a global roots music night.
Pingle has toured worldwide and this is his debut Irish performance. Audiences can expect a spiritually uplifting performance featuring a series of traditional Indian ragas and folk tunes.
Later that evening, the Senegalese kora musician Seckou Keita will treat audiences to the blissful sounds of the kora, known to many as the African harp. Ballycastle has recently welcomed many people from different parts of Africa and Ballinglen looks forward to seeing them at the concert.
The hilarious, award-winning, one-woman theatre show, Charolais, starring Noni Stapleton (RTE/Fair City) will provide many laugh-out-loud moments on November 11th. The show centres on Siobhan, who is forced to share the affections of her farmer boyfriend with the other women in his life – a sneering mother-in-law figure, and a sexy French cow.
God Knows, the Zimbabwe-born and Limerick-raised rapper, arrives in Ballinglen on November 17 for a high-octane hip-hop show. God Knows has been a regular collaborator with Denise Chaila and was a founding member of Rusangano Family (Choice Prize winners in 2017).
Lemoncello, performing on November 24, feature Laura Quirke and Claire Kinsella. Described as having a sound embedded in Irish and folk roots, they also embrace indie pop and contemporary classical music. They’ve already opened for and collaborated with many esteemed artists such as Lisa O'Neill, Sam Amidon, Glen Hansard and Cormac Begley.
Lisa O’Neill performs what might be her most intimate show of 2023 on Saturday, November 25. The Cavan-born singer is one of Ireland's most acclaimed singers and distinctive voices, with Guardian ‘album of the year’ awards and regular sold-out UK and US tours.
Mikel Murfi performs his smash-hit theatre show The Man In The Woman's Shoes on December 2. Murfi’s delightful tale of love, loneliness and belonging in rural Sligo during the 1970s is heart-warming and hilariously good fun. The show has toured extensively in Ireland and internationally, with The New York Times commending Murfi for his ‘astonishing acting’.
