The scene after the pub collapse in Kilkelly.

Road through Kilkelly has reopened today

THE road through Kilkelly has reopened this afternoon.

The welcome news was confirmed by local Councillor John Caulfield at a Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District meeting today.

Kilkelly has been closed for the past two weeks following the collapse of Duffy's pub in the village.

It wasn't under the council's remit to open the road, Councillor Caulfield explained. The site was taken over by the Health and Safety Authority, who have a job to do, but the council had pushed them on reopening it.

Councillor Caulfield thanked the council staff for their efforts on this and he also paid tribute to the emergency services and all who responded to the situation a fortnight ago.

Cathaoirleach Councillor Gerry Murray said he had also received representations on the road being reopened and only for the council's Trojan work in this regard it could have remained closed for another week or two.

Things are slowly getting back to normality in Kilkelly, he noted.

Mayo County Council has advised that while the R375 in Kilkelly has reopened, traffic management is in operation and some delays are expected.
