Green Flag celebrations at Snugboro national school

SAINT Peter's National School in Snugboro has celebrated raising its ninth Green Flag.

Pupils led by the Green School committee were amazing ambassadors for their school at the celebrations.

Huge credit goes to Mrs. Ann Murrihy and the Green Schools committee for their incredible work in driving the initiatives.

A special mention also to MCs Alicia and Smilte and their peers in sixth class for the way they presented the information about each of the nine Green Flags.

It was fitting that this flag was raised by two former colleagues who are recently retired, Mrs. Deirdre Ruttledge and Mrs. Mary McDonagh, as they took part in all of the green initiatives while they worked in St. Peter's.

The school was honoured to have former principal Mrs.Marie Loftus, Mr. Ruttledge and Lukasz Krzywon from An Taisce with them for the celebrations too.

Mrs. Loftus got the garden and polytunnel up and running many years ago and the school hope to put it to really good use in the coming weeks and months.

Lukasz was a really helpful mentor as they worked towards their ninth Green Flag.

The school is also very appreciative of the support and help received from Mayo County Council and their staff, especially Sharon Cameron and Mary Forde.

Míle buíochas to all of the staff and parents for promoting green initiatives at home and at school.

Principal Catherine McHale also extended thanks to the parents association who purchased treats for the pupils and served refreshments to guests, with the visitors very impressed by the celebrations and everyone enjoyed their day.

Looking to the future, she added: “Our challenge now is to maintain all of our green initiatives and to embrace growing plants and food at home as well as at school as we aim for our 10th Green Flag.

“Ní neart go cur le chéile.”
