Mayo school welcomes community dog "Vader"

St Joseph’s Foxford proudly welcomed the arrival of Vader last month, a specially selected Community Dog, who has quickly become an integral part of the school community.

After meticulous consideration and successful onsite training with Irish Guide Dogs, St Joseph’s received the exciting news in April 2023 that they were approved to welcome Vader and his team of handlers.

Vader, along with his three dedicated handlers is not merely a four-legged companion but a key participant in the learning process. His daily presence at the newly established breakfast club has already improved student attendance and set a positive tone for the day.

Students have the unique opportunity to engage with Vader, participating in activities like grooming, treats, play, and tricks during breakfast, creating a fun and interactive start to the school day.

Beyond the breakfast club, Vader follows a personalised timetable, joining various classes and contributing to the Level 2 Learning program, particularly in the animal care module.

His gentle disposition and social nature have a therapeutic effect, providing support to individuals who may be feeling anxious or stressed.

In just under a month, Vader has successfully transformed the school environment, making life at St Joseph’s Foxford more enjoyable, interactive, and engaging for students and staff.

The school community eagerly anticipates the continued positive influence of Vader in the educational journey of the students.
