A million reasons for Mayo people to support Irish charities this Giving Tuesday

Charities Institute Ireland this week revealed that €1 million was donated by individuals and companies in Ireland to local charities on Giving Tuesday 2022 – a new record for the day – as it launches this year’s campaign, taking place next Tuesday (November 28).

Giving Tuesday was created in the USA in 2012 as an antidote to the frantic spending of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and it’s celebrated in over 80 countries now.

Áine Myler, CEO at Charities Institute Ireland, said: “We already know that Ireland is one of the most generous countries in the world and GivingTuesday Ireland helps everyone to demonstrate and celebrate that generosity.”

The campaign day is a chance for everyone to think about giving back. On Giving Tuesday, individuals, business leaders and politicians are encouraged to tell how they already engage with a cause that’s important to them, or to make a commitment to support a charity.

“Giving is not just confined to money, although all donations are very welcome; it includes volunteering, donating expertise or equipment, or even paying it forward by buying a coffee for someone you don’t know,” said Áine.

“We’re also asking individuals and businesses from across Mayo to help us build awareness and share what they’re doing across their social media platforms using #GivingTuesdayIreland, or to visit the Giving Tuesday website for ideas and inspiration on how they can give back.”

Reflecting on the record amount raised last year in Ireland for Giving Tuesday, John Coventry, VP Corporate Affairs at GoFundMe, said: “We recently celebrated our five millionth donation from Ireland, and the country embodies our purpose at GoFundMe – to help people help each other.

“We want to empower the world to help the people and charities they care about. And we can learn a lot as we work towards that from Ireland's generosity, which is a testament to the warmth of its people. Giving Tuesday is the perfect opportunity to give back to a good cause.”
