Anger over delay in addressing Mayo Peace Park subsidence issues
"It has been known for over two years that urgent remedial works are needed at the Mayo Peace Park, Castlebar, but nothing has been done to date by Mayo County Council.
"Are they waiting for it to collapse before any action is taken?"
That's according to independent candidate, Harry Barrett
Barrett was speaking after an event at the Peace Park on Saturday, celebrating the 80th year of the Order of Malta.
He continued: "The Peace Park is making a phenomenal contribution to this town and county.
"Not only that, it is building real peace connections both here, in Northern Ireland and across the world.
"It draws many visitors to the town and is the result of the phenomenal work of Michael Feeney and his hard-working committee.
"However, their work is being threatened by lack of action from Mayo County council.
"Subsidence at the site is threatening to collapse the monument and if this is not dealt with quickly, health and safety issues will arise that may see the closure of the park.
"I am calling on Mayo County Council to take immediate immediate action at the site to secure the monument.
"I am also calling on councillors in the Castlebar Municipal District to campaign to have this monument classified as a National Monument, to be maintained by the office of public works.
"Any further inaction by Mayo County Council will have a detrimental effect on what is one of the top tourist attractions in Castlebar. We need action on this now."
