Passing of Mayo man Joe Lally who contributed hugely to tourism

The death has occurred of Joe (JJ) Lally, Rockbarton Park, Salthill, and formerly of Sligo and Linenhall Street, Castlebar.

A native of the Mayo county town, the deceased was former regional manager of Ireland West Tourism with Bord Failte Ireland.

Joe slipped away peacefully in the early hours of yesterday morning surrounded by his loving family.

He is deeply mourned by his wife Mary, sons and daughters Michael, Deirdre, Joe, John, Fergus and Fiona, dearly loved grandchildren and three great grandchildren, daughters-in-law and partners.

He is also sadly missed also by his sister Angela Reidy, nieces Clare and Denise (Gort and Ennis), the extended Lally and Purtill family and friends.

Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved family on their loss.

Joe was predeceased by his parents Michael and Mary, and by his dearly loved granddaughter Sorcha.

Many warm tributes are being paid to him on social media.

One stated: "Joe was a tireless worker for tourism and his beloved west of Ireland and will be sadly missed."

"So sad to learn of the passing of a legend - everybody knew Joe and loved him, a great worker for the west," another said.

A further tribute stated: "I had the pleasure of getting to know Joe and work with him, he was a great hard-working man. May he rest in peace."

Reposing at the O’Flaherty Funeral Parlour, Munster Avenue, Galway (H91V1K8) on Thursday, from 5 p.m. with removal at 6.30 p.m. to the Church of Christ the King Church, Salthill.

Requiem Mass will be celebrated for Joe on Friday at 11 a.m. with burial afterwards in Rahoon Cemetery.
