South Mayo pedestrian crossings requested

PEDESTRIAN crossings have been requested in Kilmaine and Shrule, adjacent to the local schools, and in Ballinrobe on the R331 from Sli na Roba to Tesco.

Mayo County Council has been urged to make applications to TII and the Department of Transport for the crossings.

Councillor Damien Ryan, in response to a motion, was told the Ballinrobe crossing could be included in active travel works. The other two are on national routes and have to meet certain criteria.

He was told pedestrian counts will need to be undertaken to justify the need for pedestrian crossing on the N84 in Shrule and Kilmaine. Assuming a need can be justified, a feasibility and options report will then be required along with a design report and approval from TII secured along with a funding allocation.

Councillor Michael Burke commented about the costs involved with crossings - €30,000 for two lights to flash so people can cross the road. He couldn't understand the figure.
