A motorist had a lucky escape in Turlough after their vehicle ploughed into a wall opposite a dangerous bend in the village.

Mayo rural community on alert after two crashes in space of 24 hours

The community of Turlough has issued an alert over a dangerous bend in the shadow of the village's historic round tower.

Two crashes occurred at the location within 24 hours of one another.

In one of the accidents, a vehicle skidded into the footpath and smashed into a roadside wall.

Concerned resident Tommy Lawless informed Councillor Michael Kilcoyne and Pat McHale, senior executive engineer, Castlebar Municipal District, about the matter.

They both attended the scene to examine the dangerous bend and consider a proposal by local people to address the situation before a fatality occurs.

There are lands available to address the issue.
