Fresh speculation over much-loved Mayo licensed premises

Fresh speculation is rife over the future of Eddie Cannon's public house, Shamble Square, Castlebar.

Some furniture was removed from the premises yesterday, leading to much local debate that the property may be in the process of being put up for sale.

It is understood there is keen interest by local investors to acquire the pub because of its prime location.

The full details of the story are expected to unfold over the coming months.

The pub has not been trading for the past number of years but the licence remains in place.

Former customers have very fond memories of enjoyable times spent there.

Run by Eddie Cannon and his wife Hannah, it was known locally as The Academy.

It was said to be 'a popular meeting place for saints, scholars, political commentators, weather forecasters, poets, philosophers and football fanatics'.

Acting as chairman, Eddie kept all debate under control.

Wouldn't it be wonderful to see The Academy up and running again.

Time will tell.
