Fine Gael slump in support puts Mayo MEP’s seat in jeopardy

According to a recent poll by the European Council on Foreign Relations, Fine Gael is experiencing a decline in support for the upcoming European elections.

The poll predicts Sinn Féin gaining three new seats, while Fianna Fáil is also expected to benefit from Fine Gael's drop in support.

Fianna Fáil Senator Lisa Chambers is anticipated to accept her party's nomination in April, running alongside her party mate, Barry Cowan. The ECFR polling suggests Fianna Fáil will secure an additional seat in Ireland in the June elections.

Notably, Fine Gael stalwarts Frances Fitzgerald and Deirdre Clune have both announced their intentions to step down. Additionally, Mairead McGuinness vacated her seat in the Border Midlands West constituency to assume a role in the European Commission.

In Mayo, two politicians are vying for votes to represent the constituency in Europe. Early polling indicates positive prospects for Fianna Fáil's Lisa Chambers but unfavourable news for its government partner Fine Gael. Maria Walsh was elected in 2019 but will face a battle from within her own county once again, doubled with the latest polling it places her seat under threat.

Brian O’Boyle has been announced as People Before Profit candidate for the Border Midlands West constituency. Sinn Féin has added Tyrone-based MLA Michelle Gildernew to run alongside MEP Chris MacManus.
