Traveller accommodation in Mayo to be discussed in Leinster House

The Joint Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community (2023) will meet tomorrow (Thursday) to discuss Traveller accommodation matters with representatives from Mayo County Council and Cork City Council.

Speaking ahead of the meeting at 10.30 a.m. in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House, committee cathaoirleach Senator Eileen Flynn said: “The committee looks forward to continuing its work on the area of accommodation for the Traveller Community. We will meet with representatives of Cork City Council and Mayo County Council to discuss the ongoing need for culturally appropriate accommodation for members of the Traveller Community.

“The committee is particularly interested in discussing the redevelopment of the Spring Lane and Ellis Yard sites in Cork city as well as the Castlebar site in Co. Mayo.

“Additionally, we will continue our consultation with witnesses on the subject of the Caravan Loan Scheme for trailers, the term preferred by members of the Traveller Community. It is important to hear directly from those who operate the scheme on whether the scheme in its current form is satisfactory.”

The Joint Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community (2023) has 14 members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad. The committee was re-established in June 2023 to continue the work of the previous committee, whose final report can be found here.
