Safety issue at bend on approach to central Mayo town

A SAFETY issue on the Kiltimagh Road into Balla, on a sharp turn, has been raised with council management.

An accident occurred recently at the location, at Woodlands.

People unfamiliar with the road are not aware of the sharp turn, Councillor Donna Sheridan told a municipal meeting this week. It needs signage, she suggested.

Councillor Cyril Burke said there is a 90 degree bend and the recent accident could have been fatal, where a motorist didn't know the bend was there and went straight on.

Councillor Al McDonnell suggested an island on the road on the Kiltimagh approach might solve the issue, along with increased signage.

In a statement, local election candidate Donna Hyland has called on Mayo County Council to address a road safety issue at a dangerous bend on the Kiltimagh to Balla road.

The site on the R324 was the scene of a recent accident.

Ms. Hyland said: “The area of this part of the road can be a blind spot for drivers”.

A Sinn Féin local election candidate for Castlebar Municipal District, she said: “The site where a local cul-de-sac and a secondary road meets the R324 serves many residents of Balla and the issue needs to be addressed urgently.

“I have raised this concern with Mayo County Council.

"I understand that this road safety issue is on their agenda and that they are considering solutions.

"I would urge the council to consult with the community as soon as possible to address this issue."
