'Incredible' new Mayo coastal walking trail is proceeding

Mayo County Council is seeking planning permission to proceed with the development of the the proposed 15-kilometres Ceide Coastal Walk.

The authority has announced its decision to proceed to the Part 8 stage of the planning process in respect of the amenity.

A notice of its intentions is published in this week's issue of The Connaught Telegraph.

The proposal involves the construction of a trail linking the Céide Fields Neolithic site and the Wild Atlantic Way Discovery Point at Downpatrick Head, near Ballycastle.

The project includes the construct of 11 bridges, safety fencing, gates and stiles and the improvement of underfoot conditions, where necessary.

Councillor Jarlath Munnelly has described the project as 'incredible'.

He elaborated: "Several years of work have gone into this project.

"It has been led from the start by the local community, none more so than the Céide Coast Group as well as landowners along the route working in partnership with Mayo County Council.

"Now public consultation is opening as part of the planning process.

"I’ve been an enthusiastic supporter of this project from the off and I’m so delighted it’s progressing.

"I believe this is going to be a spectacular project that will be enjoyed by both tourists and locals alike. The north coast of Mayo is a hidden gem."

Councillor Munnelly encouraged anyone interested in the project to log on to the Mayo County Council portal and submit your views on this.

"If anyone has concerns or specific issues about this project don’t hesitate to contact me," he added.
