Deputy Michael Ring.

Mayo TD running at next election “for the moment”

Mayo TD Michael Ring intends running in the next general election.

The former Minister was speaking on RTÉ Radio One and stated “for the moment” he will be competing in the next general election.

Fine Gael have been rocked by nine outgoing TDs confiming their intention to step down at the next general election, Wexford’s Paul Keohane was the latest to make the statement last night and that makes over a quarter of Fine Gael TDs opting to step back from politics.

Long serving TD Michael Ring compared his party to the Dublin football team, saying they had to have a few years to step away and then came back and won the All-Ireland, Fine Gael will need to do the same and will win the next general election.”

When asked if he will contest the election, Michael Ring was less than convincing and remarked: “I’m standing for election at the moment, but I’ve been a long time in politics, over 30 years.”
