Volunteers 'abandoned ship' when grant for boat to clean Mayo river fell short

Trees need to be removed from the side walls of the Castlebar River.

Not alone do they look bad but they are doing damage, local Councillor Martin McLoughlin stated.

Told this is a matter for the OPW to address, he requested the council contact them about the issue.

“The longer it goes on the more damage will be done to the sides of the river,” said Councillor McLoughlin.

Councillor Blackie Gavin said the community clean-up group applied for funding for a flat-bottomed boat so they could do a proper clean of the river.

They could only get €1,000 towards the €4,500 cost and so 'abandoned ship'.
