Mayo community devastated by tragedy which claimed man's life

The 33-year-old man who has died from injuries received when he was struck by a vehicle at a pedestrian crossing in Ballina on Tuesday was accompanying his young niece to a local shop to buy her a treat at the time.

Heart-rending details of the tragedy are emerging as the victim, James Moyles, a resident of Ballina, was named locally.

Mr. Moyles passed away at Mayo University Hospital yesterday evening from injuries received earlier in the impact at Lord Edward Street.

His six-year-old niece was treated in hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Members of the local community and public representatives are today describing what happened as "a tragedy for Ballina of unparalleled awfulness."

"Our hearts go out to the families involved," said Councillor Seamus Weir, cathaoirleach of Ballina Municipal District.

"As well as the relatives of James Moyles we are also thinking of the (male) driver involved who is understandably deeply traumatised."

Gardai have launched a full-scale forensic investigation into the impact.

A post mortem examination has been scheduled at Mayo University Hospital prior to Mr. Moyles's remains being released for burial.

An inquest into the death is likely to be held by the Coroner for the District of Mayo, Pat O'Connor, at a later date.
