Mayo residents alerted as rodent call outs surged by 33% in January

Mayo homeowners are urged to remain vigilant as Rentokil, raises concerns over a significant increase in rat-related call outs in the county.

According to recent statistics released by Rentokil, there has been a notable 33% surge in rat call outs in January 2024 compared to the same period last year.

The rise in rat activity is attributed to colder temperatures, which prompt these rodents to seek shelter indoors, thereby increasing the risk of infestations in residential and commercial properties throughout Mayo.

Counties Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Monaghan, Roscommon, and Sligo are also affected by this alarming trend.

Colm Moore, Area Technical Manager for Rentokil, stressed the importance of early detection and prevention of rat infestations. "We encourage home and business owners in Mayo to remain mindful of the presence of rats in their premises," said Moore.

"Early identification of signs such as droppings and gnaw marks is crucial for effective prevention and mitigation efforts."

The report indicates that Cork experienced a 50% increase in rat-related callouts in January 2024 compared to the previous year, while Dublin saw a 32% increase during the same period, underlining the widespread nature of the issue across the country.

Rats not only pose structural risks to properties but also health and reputational risks due to potential disease transmission.

Rentokil advises Mayo residents to visit their website for more information on identifying signs of rat infestations and implementing rodent-proofing solutions like Flexi Armour to safeguard their properties.

With the threat of rat infestations on the rise, people are urged to take proactive measures to protect their homes and businesses from these persistent pests. Early detection and effective prevention strategies are essential in mitigating the risks associated with rat infestations in the region.
