Passing of Mayo nursing tutor in his adopted Adelaide

The death has occurred in his adopted Adelaide, Australia, of Castlebar born Joe Neary, a former member of the nursing staff at St. Mary's Hospital, Castlebar.

Joe passed away on Friday last after a long illness courageously borne.

In the late 1960s Joe, a son of Michael and Bridie Neary, McHale Road, followed in his father's footsteps by joining the nursing staff of St. Mary's.

He later rose to the position of nurse tutor and was highly regarded for his teaching prowess.

After a spell working as a tutor in London, Joe emigrated with his wife Angie to Adelaide where he continued his career as a nurse tutor at the University of Adelaide.

Well travelled in his younger days and blessed with a sparkling vocabulary, Joe was hugely popular with his students and the wider communities, where he has lived in the past six decades.

Predeceased by his parents and his siblings Tony, Mary, Breege, Anne and Nora, Joe is survived by Angie, their family Jacob, Isaak, Joe, Eden, Gemma and Riona, grandchildren, nephews and nieces.

He is also survived by his brother Michael (Castlebar) and sisters Teresa (Canada), Jacinta Doherty (Castlebar), Tina Geraghty (Westport) and Helen Keane (Donegal).

Sympathy is extended to the bereaved family on their loss.

Funeral will take place in Australia.

May Joe's gentle soul rest in peace.
