Relay for Life returns to Westport

Westport's Relay for Life event is returning to the South Mall in the town on May 18 and 19.

Building on the huge success of last year, where over €50,000 was raised to support the the Irish Cancer Society, the Westport Relay for Life commitee have come back together with some new faces to try and raise even more this year.

Last year was an all round success with a large crowd of cancer survivors leading out on the first lap of the event - a visual reminder of the strength, support and hope that is in front of us.

The committee are calling on everyone to gather their friends and family, sports team, social group or work colleagues and come together to support those who have fought or are fighting against this tireless disease.

It's very rare to find a home unaffected by cancer, which has taken many a loved one from our lives far too soon.

The Relay event is a 24-hour challenge that involves team members sharing a walk around the track at South Mall, showing that as a community we will not rest until cancer does.

The weekend will include two days of amazing local talent taking on an outdoor stage, speakers, dancers and much more in the indoor marquee. There will be team tents filled with games and interactive fundraisers, food trucks and much more.

Candle bags

Candle bags are now available as part of the event. These are a beautiful token to remember those who have passed, someone struggling or just a loved one we want to send some love to.

The bags are just €5 and are a huge part of the fundraising efforts throughout the event.

They are available from committee members or in O'Brien's shop on James Street.

Saturday night at dusk (approx 9.40 p.m.) is a very special part of the event - the Candle of Hope ceremony.

This involves all the beautiful candle bags being illuminated on the Fairgreen in Westport where they remain throughout the night to shine as a beacon of hope to those walking throughout the night. Beautiful words and music will be shared, with an indescribable feeling of unity and strength between the crowds gathered.

This closes out day one, with walkers remaining on the track throughout the night under the candle and moonlight.

Donations

If you are unable to attend over the weekend or would like to support the event, donations, be it financial or in the way of a service or fundraising event, are appreciated.

The committee has extended thanks for the support of the Mall residents, local gardaí and council along with many local services and businesses for their support.
