Councillors can’t support playing pitch study at Mayo county town park
A SUGGESTION that a feasibility study be carried out to assess the possibility of developing a community playing pitch at the Town Park in Castlebar has not received full support.
This is because of an agreement made with local residents that other than the playground, no other facilities would go in there.
A motion brought by Councillor Ger Deere asking that a study be carried out stands adjourned before Castlebar Municipal District for some more research on the matter.
Councillor Deere brought his motion to address the lack of playing pitches in the town, saying the town park is 'totally under utilised'.
However, Councillor Michael Kilcoyne said there had been a clear agreement with residents that the playground could go in but there was to be nothing further.
Councillor Blackie Gavin reiterated this, adding there is a masterplan for Lough Lannagh and it should be incorporated down there. There is also the land to be transferred from the HSE for sports development.
Councillor Deere said he was just asking for a study, 'not another MacHale Park'.
However, Councillor Kilcoyne said they would be honouring the commitment given to residents and he wouldn't support a study.
Cathaoirleach Councillor Al McDonnell asked for some research to be done on the history of the matter and he adjourned it to their next meeting.
