Central Mayo candidate launches her local election campaign

Bucko’s Bar at Linenhall street in Castlebar was packed to capacity on Saturday night last as an enthusiastic crowd of friends and supporters of Mayo Sinn Féin’ s local election candidate Donna Hyland gathered for her campaign launch.

The young nurse and mother from Manulla is seeking to win a seat in the Castlebar Local Election Area in June’s Mayo County Council elections, where she will have to unseat one of the incumbent councillors, who are all seeking re-election.

The atmosphere of support and energy was palpable as Donna Hyland took to the stage to set out her vision for local government. Selected by her party to contest the local elections last July Donna Hyland has already been speaking to local people, raising their concerns and ‘learning about what constituents expect from a local county councillor.’

In her passionate campaign launch speech Donna Hyland took the opportunity to propose to the audience to vote for change on June 7th.

Donna Hyland said: “Alongside my colleague, Rose Conway-Walsh TD, I will be advocating for increased social and affordable homes. Local people have been clear on what they want from the next government and that is a change in housing policy which Sinn Féin are committed to delivering locally and nationally.”

Continuing to speak on housing Donna Hyland said: ‘I think the scourge of Defective Concrete Block is awful and not the fault of the homeowner. That is why, I will be advocating and campaigning for a 100% redress scheme for affected homeowners and no less.”

The Castlebar based nurse alluded to her experience of working within the public health service and the daily challenges that face both patients and healthcare workers.

“If you elect me to Mayo County Council, I pledge to be a strong voice in raising local healthcare issues because I know the system and that sets me apart from every other candidate.”

Speaking about her grá for where she lives Donna Hyland elaborated: “Castlebar Municipal District is geographically spread and includes rural communities along with the county town. All the areas within the Castlebar Municipal District are crying out for resources, whether it’s a new Athletics track for the county town, increased investments in Active Transport Routes or whether rural dwellers are respected and have access to basic services like GP services, Garda stations and other amenities, I will prioritise the development of our local area if elected to Mayo County Council.”

Speaking after the event Rose Conway-Walsh TD said: 'Sinn Fein need a strong team of councillors in Mayo County Council to deliver for people. Donna will work hard to represent Castlebar. Her nursing experience combined with a strong work ethic will enable her to work diligently as a county councillor implementing Sinn Fein policies that will make a real difference in peoples’ lives.’
