Death of Mayo born former TD Emmett Stagg

HOLLYMOUNT born former Labour TD Emmett Stagg has passed away aged 79.

He served as a Dáil Deputy for 29 years, representing the Kildare and Kildare North constituencies from 1987 to 2016.

He served twice as a Minister of State in a Rainbow Coalition Government composed of Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and Democratic Left.

Born in Hollymount, Emmett Stagg was one of a large family of thirteen siblings.

He was educated at Ballinrobe CBS and Kevin Street College of Technology.

He worked as a medical technologist at Trinity College before entering full-time politics.

Emmet Stagg's brother Frank was a Provisional Irish Republican Army member, who died in a British prison in 1976 while on hunger strike and was laid to rest in Leigue Cemetery, Ballina.

Remains will repose at Reilly’s Funeral Home, Maynooth, on Wednesday evening from 4 to 8 p.m.

Removal on Thursday at 11 a.m. to arrive at St. Brigid’s Church, Straffan, for 12 noon funeral Mass followed by burial in Straffan Cemetery.
