Mid-table finish for Mayo at end of league campaign
Mayo ended any lingering fears of relegation with a 2-9 to 2-6 victory over Waterford in the final round of the Lidl LGFA National League Division 1 campaign in James Stephens Park, Ballina, on Sunday.
Liam McHale's charges end the campaign on 10 points after three wins, three defeats and a draw, and can be satisfied with the league overall in a year of transition.
Two goals from the impressive Fionnuala McLaughlin made the difference for Mayo against a Waterford side that were in it until the end.
The Munster team still have one game left to play and face a straight shootout with Galway in a bid to survive in the top flight for another year.
Apart from the final between Armagh and Kerry, that Galway v Waterford contest is the sole remaining game in Division 1 as the fixture was postponed over the St. Patrick's Day weekend due to adverse weather and pitch conditions.
Galway have improved after a slow start to the league and a win would condemn Waterford to the second relegation spot alongside the already doomed Cork.
After they play Waterford, Galway will have a number of weeks to prepare for the Connacht final showdown with Mayo, a game which will be played in May.
