New pontoon will see improve Mayo coastal links

ACHILL and Blacksod can look forward to greater connectivity by sea this summer.

A pontoon is due to be put in place at Dugort, Achill, in May, allowing it to link up with Blacksod on the Mullet Peninsula.

The importance of the pontoon links at both locations was highlighted by John Gallagher, chairman of Comharchumann Forbartha Ionad Deirbhile Teo, when he addressed a council meeting in the new SOLAS centre in Eachléim.

For example, it meant visitors could be brought from Belmullet to explore the Achill cliffs - the highest in Europe.

Councillor Paul McNamara agreed it would be significant for developing day trips. And who knows, maybe one day there will be a ferry link.

It is hoped, he said, the Dugort pontoon will be in place in May.
