Warm tributes to popular Mayo personality Ollie Roache on his passing

The death has taken place today of Ollie Roache, McHale Road, Castlebar.

A member of an old Castlebar family, he was a much-loved and popular personality.

News of his passing has evoked a tremendous sense of loss in the community where he was held in such high regard.

He is deeply regretted by his loving wife of 61 years Eileen (née Kelly), sons and daughters, Bernadette Gavin, Brian, Orla O'Connor, Adrian and Mark, brother Bernard, 13 grandchildren, five great grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, nephews, nieces, brothers in law, sisters in law, cousins, relatives, neighbours and friends, to whom sympathy is tendered.

In his 80s, Ollie was predeceased by his sons Ollie and Kenneth, brothers Mick and Frank, sisters Bridie, Ann and Nell,

A former staff member of Castlebar Bacon Company, Ollie was very proud of McHale Road and was a tremendous neighbour.

He had a keen interest in local history and enjoyed conversations about the town's past.

In a tribute, his lifelong friend Johnny Mee, described Ollie as "an exceptionally nice and decent man."

"I was deeply saddened to learn of his passing and my condolences are extended to his lovely wife Eileen and family.

"The town is a lesser place without his kindness, courtesy and brilliant wit. God rest his gentle soul."

In a tribute, Ollie's neighbour, former town councillor Kevin Guthrie, stated: "It is with great sadness that I learned of the sad death of a great friend, neighbour and a McHale Road stalwart.

"I enjoyed many nights out with Ollie, great memories, great stories, great quizzes. We will miss him hugely."

Tributes are also being paid to him on social media where he was described as 'a wonderful character.'

His remains will be reposing at his home, 26 McHale Road, on Tuesday from 4.30 until 7 p.m.

Removal from his home on Wednesday at 10.15 a.m. to the Church of The Holy Rosary, Castlebar, via Spencer Street for Requiem Mass at 11.30 a.m.

Interment takes place afterwards in the New Cemetery, Castlebar.
