Mayo glory on the treble in 'breathtaking' Westport marathon

Despite the challenges posed by the windy weather at Westport, this did not deter the 3,000 participants that took in the second nnual Westport Marathon incorporating a 10k, half and full marathon event.

The race attracted runners from all over Ireland and beyond who come to challenge themselves in one of the most beautiful parts of the country.

Participants get to experience breathtaking views of Clew Bay along the rugged coastline with the presence of Croagh Patrick all along the route.

Winner of the full marathon for the second successive year in a row was Brendan Conway who finished in a time of 2:48:54.

The first female over the line was Deirdre Martin from Leitrim, coming in at a time of 3:09:49.

Taking the number one spot in the men's half marathon in a record breaking time of 1:06:24 was Mayo man Hugh Armstrong.

Aisling O'Connor, a native from Kildare, took first prize in the women's half marathon.

The 10k competitors didn’t waste time with Kildare man John Regan racing across the finish line in a record time of at 00:34:14.

In the woman's section, Ellen Moran, a native of Westport running with Galway City Harriers, took the top prize for the second year running with an amazing time of 00:36:03!

Westport Marathon was delighted to have Mayo Roscommon Hospice as the charity partner for this year.

Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation exists to fund palliative care services to people with life-limiting illnesses and their families in County Mayo and County Roscommon.

The foundation affirms life, respecting the uniqueness of each individual, by caring and supporting to meet the physical and emotional needs of patients and their families living with life-threatening illnesses.

The service enables patients to live out the remainder of their lives in comfort and dignity.

The palliative care service is provided free of charge to all.
