Fine Gael in Mayo suffer local election blow due to shock resignation

The Fine Gael constituency organiser and director of elections for Mayo has stepped down from the role with immediate effect.

The official has informed the party of his decision.

He has wished all of the candidates the very best of luck in the forthcoming local elections.

The official has thanked his fellow constituency officers for all of their assistance

His letter of resignation, seen by The Connaught Telegraph, further outlined: "I thank the members of the local elections strategy committee, the general election strategy committee and, more recently, the local elections steering group for their participation, input and support.

"I thank John McHugh (party chairman) for his advice and support and his commitment to the Fine Gael party in Mayo over a lifetime.

"I will continue to be a member of the Fine Gael party."

It is understood there have been organisational problems within the party in recent weeks due to the division of electoral areas to candidates in a number of districts.

But it is unclear whether or not this issue was a factor in the official's decision.

The party officially launched their local election campaign in Mayo a week ago.
