Independent Ireland unveils Mayo local election candidate

Donal Geraghty, a dedicated community leader and lifelong resident of Castlebar, has been selected as an Independent Ireland party candidate in the Mayo County Council elections.

With a strong commitment to serving his community and a wealth of experience in volunteer service and local businesses, Donal brings a fresh perspective and a determination to drive positive change in Castlebar Municipal District.

Aged 32, he has been deeply embedded in the life and spirit of the town for over three decades.

His extensive volunteer work with the Castlebar Order of Malta Ambulance Corps and as a Community First Responder with the HSE National Ambulance Service reflects his dedication to community well-being and mental health support.

In 2017, Donal played a pivotal role in establishing the Darkness Into Light Castlebar walk for suicide prevention, showcasing his commitment to addressing critical issues affecting the community.

Professionally, Donal serves as a support staff member at Mayo University Hospital and manages a small family business, Geraghty Fuels Castlebar, alongside his father, Padraic.

This unique combination of roles provides Donal with a comprehensive understanding of both the healthcare needs of the community and the challenges faced by local businesses.

"As a proud supporter of Castlebar Celtic F.C., I am committed to promoting sports and recreation within our community," said Geraghty.

"If elected, I pledge to be the voice of common sense and honesty on the Mayo County Council, representing every individual in our area."

Donal's local priorities include advocating strongly for those overlooked by other parties, pushing for real action on long-standing projects such as the Imperial Hotel and Military barracks, and addressing basic community needs like road maintenance and hedge cutting promptly.

Additionally, he supports the establishment of a new school for Castlebar Educate Together and is committed to increasing affordable housing options for young people in the area.

"I am delighted to support Donal Geraghty's candidacy for Castlebar LEA," said Michael Fitzmaurice TD.

"Donal's dedication to community service and his pragmatic approach to local issues make him an ideal representative for Castlebar. I have every confidence that he will be a strong voice for the people of the town and surrounding areas," he added.
