We destroyed something glorious – former Mayo GAA manager

Former Mayo manager John Maughan has lamented the dwindling excitement surrounding GAA provincial championships as Kevin McStay’s team prepares to face rivals Roscommon at Dr. Hyde Park this Sunday.

Speaking to Off the Ball, Maughan highlighted the lack of buzz in Castlebar and Roscommon, attributing it to the current layout of the championship. "We've played two rounds, 16 games so far, and it's been dreadful," he remarked.

Maughan criticised the scheduling of the Connacht semi-final in April, a time when weather conditions are typically poor, instead of in "June or July," which he believes detracts from the competition's overall appeal.

The former Lahardane MacHales manager expressed his disappointment, stating, "We have destroyed something unique, and there's no excitement whatsoever leading into this game."
