RTÉ's 'Hidden Treasures' programme visits Mayo museum

JUMP behind the scenes at Ireland’s biggest, best and quirkiest museums as RTÉ’s Ireland's Hidden Treasures takes viewers on a mind-blowing journey the length of breadth of the country.

Running for three weeks from Sunday, April 21, at 6.30 p.m., Ireland’s Hidden Treasures takes audiences into the fascinating world of our heavy hitters, the National Museum and National Library of Ireland, in our nation’s capital. And they also visit eight of the best, the most beautiful and intriguing regional museums around the country, including in Mayo.

Did you know the National Museum of Ireland has over 4.5 million historical items in storage and the National Library has in its care over 12.5 million pieces relating to the story and identity of Ireland? The majority of these items are never put on display so now is your chance to unlock the doors and to lift the veil on some of our most amazing hidden treasures.

From Waterford’s Museum of Time to Leitrim’s Glenview Folk Museum, from Cork’s Public Museum to Mayo’s Jackie Clarke Collection, from Galway City Museum to Kilkenny’s Medieval Mile Museum and from Tipperary’s Cashel Folk Museum to Limerick’s Hunt Museum, tune in to see wondrous artefacts and gripping stories all lovingly cared for and preserved by the people who work in and run these museums, people who are national treasures in and off themselves.

Amidst items from world renowned artists such as Picasso and Gauguin, the programme features a tiny gold skull with a dark and mysterious background. With the unveiling of a space rock older than the planet and an investigation into an Italian influenced ceramic mystery and the revelation of Ireland’s biggest ever Lego model to a pair of iron shackles that represent Irish Traveller activism, this series is must-watch TV.

Ireland's Hidden Treasures is more than a documentary series; it's a celebration of Ireland's enduring legacy and a tribute to those who dedicate their lives to preserving it. This series is set to reignite the appreciation for Ireland's national treasures and the stories they hold.

Don't miss the journey into Ireland's heart and history with Ireland's Hidden Treasures. Tune in to RTÉ 1 on Sunday, April 21, at 6.30 p.m. for this extraordinary opportunity to go behind the scenes at Ireland’s museums.
