Works carried out on accident black spot at scenic Mayo location

Works on much-needed safety and improvements works at the scenic Windy Gap have been completed by Mayo County Council.

The news has been welcomed by Councillor Ger Deere.

He and other councillors had raised the dangerous condition in which the spot was left after forestry was cleared there some months ago.

This left no protection to motorists and cyclists exposed to a steep embankment.

Works carried out have included building up a protective bank along the edge and widening ring the other side of the road.

Councillor Deere said that he hopes in time a more permanent barrier can be put in place to protect all road users on this busy road.

He added forestry operators need to have proper consultation with the council before felling commences to ensure the situation that happened at the Windy Gap never happens again in any other area where a location was left in such a dangerous condition which could lead to serious accidents or fatalities.

"All this should be part of felling licences for these forestry operators," he stated.
