Consultants set to be appointed to Mayo town's local transport plan

Mayo County Council is expected to sign a contract in the next two weeks with consultants to develop the detailed designs for 'proposal one' of the Castlebar Local Transport Plan and to take it through to construction.

This element of the plan has relatively few constraints impeding its delivery - but it will be subject to NTA funding approval, the authority has confirmed.

'Proposal one' will connect the town from north to south along the R309, with extensions along the R308 to Castlebar Railway Station and towards the town centre.

The plan will result in improvements to the active travel infrastructure at Knockphunta, Westport Road, to include a new footpath and safe crossing points.

The impact on traffic movement due to the existing pedestrian crossing at Aldi is also under examination.
