Danger still exists on Mayo greenway where more fencing is needed

DANGER still exists along the greenway river in Castlebar at Summerfield.

Fencing has taken place at Springfield, but residents in nearby Summerfield say their stretch is just as bad, if not worse, in some locations along the river, Councillor Michael Kilcoyne has highlighted.

Castlebar Municipal District has written to TII for funding to fence where there are issues on the greenway along the river but no response has yet been received.

Municipal head David Mellett agreed there are some high risk areas and the council will see about putting temporary measures in place.

Councillor Blackie Gavin had a motion previously to seek funding to extend the fencing beyond Summerfield to the first bridge.

There are a couple of bad spots along the route and it is dangerous, he said.

Councillor Gavin lamented that if the town council were still in place, these works would be done.

His colleague highlighted how there has already been one fatality on the stretch.
