Major victory for Mayo minors against big rivals

Mayo proved too strong for big rivals Galway in the Connacht GAA Under 17 football championship, recording a 2-13 to 1-6 victory in Tuam Stadium.

It's a second win in succession for Mayo, who were equally impressive in their opening round victory over Roscommon at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park.

A fine goal by Harry McHale helped Mayo into a six-point lead (1-4 to 0-1) after just 11 minutes, and by half-time the visitors were nine points ahead (1-8 to 0-2), Evan Walsh chipping in with four of those points for the Green and Red.

Cillian Walsh scored Galway's two points in that first half, but a Charlie Killeen goal at the start of the second gave the hosts a brief glimmer of hope.

It was short-lived as Oisín Deane netted at the other end, and from there on it always seemed just a question of how much Mayo would win by.

Walsh added to his tally, with Kobe McDonald and Dylan Flynn also getting in on the scoring act, helping Mayo to secure a very convincing 10-point win.

The second game in the Connacht Championship on Friday evening saw Roscommon run out 2-15 to 1-9 winners over Leitrim. Next Friday's fixtures see Mayo take on Leitrim and Roscommon host Sligo, while Galway have a bye.
