Mayo boxer Shannon Sweeney joins elite of her sport with European gold

Majestic Mayo boxer Shannon Sweeney, a member of St. Anne's BC, Westport, has joined the elite of her sport.

She captured a gold medal for Ireland at the European championship in Serbia with a brilliant triumph over Zlatislava Gena Chukanova (Bulgaria) in the light-flyweight division.

As well as the glory of winning Ireland 21st gold medal at the championships, she will also secure $15,000 towards her training fund.

A big homecoming is now being planned for Shannon on her return home.

Sweeney came from behind on points after the first round to seal a 4-1 verdict from the judges.

She performed with skill, intelligence and zeal to carve out a richly-merited win, a reward for all her dedication and commitment.

What a day for Mayo sport and boxing in particular.
