East Mayo town celebrates opening of its new green heart

KILTIMAGH'S Emigrant Park is a blueprint for sustainable community-led parkland development.

The town's new green heart was officially opened on Saturday with a community celebration.

You can stroll a Roman road, take a seat in the willow classroom, learn about biodiversity and our peatlands, or enjoy the peace and quiet of being with nature in a countryside setting right in the heart of the town.

The park is a place to not only reconnect with nature but also with the community, a place to stop and chat as you enjoy a peaceful walk.

This is phase one of the project and further developments will be led by the community in what is a park for the people, inspired by the people.

Community past and present is an integral feature of Emigrant Park, which remembers the diaspora and those who stayed at home.

Bill Durkan was on hand to officially open phase one on Saturday. Mr. Durkan generously supported the committee's fundraising appeal to complete this stage.

Minister of State Dara Calleary hailed it as a beautiful oasis of nature and sustainability, delivered by a wonderful community meitheal.

Offering his congratulations, Minister of State Alan Dillon commented: “There is so much to see, do and enjoy at this amenity. It's certainly more than just a park, it's a vibrant community space for relaxation and enjoyment.”

Local Councillor Adrian Forkan said this fantastic community amenity will be enjoyed by generations of local people and visitors alike.
