Achill Tourism hosts Home to Mayo Walks Festival

THIS May, immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty and rich heritage of Achill Island at the Home to Mayo Walks Festival from May 17 to 19.

Organised as part of the Home to Mayo festival, the event promises an unforgettable experience for nature enthusiasts, history buffs and families alike.

Event highlights include the following.

Friday, May 17: Great Western Greenway 5k walk. Kickstart the weekend with a leisurely stroll along the new extension of the Great Western Greenway, from Achill Sound to Saula and back. Led by a local guide, you'll uncover fascinating history, folklore, and even learn a few words ‘as Gaeilge’. The walk begins at 7.30 p.m.

Saturday, May 18, offers two routes.

Slí Gráinne Mhaol guided hike: Traverse the spectacular landscapes a 6.7km looped trail in the hills of the southeast. Led by knowledgeable guides, this moderately strenuous hike starts at 10 a.m. and includes refreshments afterwards.

Dooega loop walk guided hike: A captivating journey through the foothills of Minaun on a looped trail, this 3 - 3.5 hour hike promises an enriching experience filled with history, folklore, and refreshments. The adventure begins at 10 a.m.

On Saturday evening there's a social night as Gaeilge at Patten’s Bar, Dereens, from 9 p.m. Open to all, this fun-filled evening offers a taste of Irish culture, with music, laughter, and a warm céad míle fáilte for everyone.

Sunday, May 19: Dooagh loop walk guided ecology walk. Round off the weekend with a family-friendly adventure on the Dooagh loop walk, focusing on nature, biodiversity and conservation. Led by local guides, this gentle 4km trail promises fascinating insights into Achill's natural wonders, alongside tales of local history and folklore.

The walk starts at 10 a.m. from the car park at Gielty’s Bar & Restaurant, Keel West.

Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a curious explorer, the Home to Mayo Walks Festival offers something for everyone.

“We're thrilled to be hosting this exciting event in Achill,” said Chris McCarthy, manager of Achill Tourism. “Achill is one of the most beautiful places in Ireland, and we're delighted to be showcasing its natural beauty to walkers from all over the world.”

The weekend will also include a focus on customs, traditions and old stories as well as much more. The walks take in some of the island's significant historical and archaeological sites.

This event will be managed by Achill Tourism and is supported by Mayo County Council, Home To Mayo and Sláintecare Community.
